There’s a quest to find the Wippy bunny, this new meme image
that appeared sometime ago in the Internets.
How can one describe the bunny?
It’s pink, it’s ugly and looks like a geek.
Now after applying some of my Google Fu I found out that the
Wippy bunny had very interesting origins.
Apparently it is from the line of dolls called Uglydolls.
Initially named Ugly Doll, singular, not plural, Uglydolls
started with a mere illustration of a weird creature that David Horvath did on
a letter he wrote to his Korean girlfriend, who was moving away. In the letter he indicated his goal of
reaching their dreams as a couple—to be able to tell stories via books and
toys. Horvath was surprised with what he
received included in the reply from his girlfriend: a hand sewn Wage! There begins the story of the Uglydolls.
Horvath shared his girlfriend’s creation to Eric Nakamura,
who owns the Giant Robot Magazine and shop—another brand with humble,
garage-level origins. Nakamura thought
David was pitching a product and asked for more dolls. He accompanied his girlfriend’s creations
with lots of stories of the crazy adventures of their characters. They’ve been creating dolls since the year
2000, and it’s been selling like crazy!
Apparently, Wippy came out in the year 2010, a pink creature
with bunny like ears. He’s listed as
Product # 10438 and costs USD 20. Wippy
has this description on his page:
“Dude, like seriously for real, Wippy is looking out for
you. Every time you see Wippy you might as well shout out “Good lookin'
out!", because he probably did something
remarkable for you without you even being aware of it! In fact, most the
time... you'll swear Wippy's done absolutely nothing for you. That's how
stealth his awesome forces of assistance is. For real though! Remember that
time you were all depressed and wondering when things were going to turn
around? I know, huh. Anyway, Wippy's got you.”
